50 Years of Sino-Brazilian Friendship: A Journey of Co-operation and Prosperity
By Henrique Couto da Nóbrega, President of the Sino-Brazilian Friendship Association
Introduction
In 2024, we celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Brazil and China, a historic milestone that symbolises a journey of cooperation, mutual growth and ever stronger bonds of friendship. As President of the Sino-Brazilian Friendship Association, in partnership with the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), I share reflections on the achievements of this partnership over the decades and the promising prospects for the future.
A History of Partnerships and Achievements
The process of rapprochement between Brazil and China began under the Jânio Quadros administration in 1961. During that period, Brazil, through its Independent Foreign Policy (IEP), sought to strengthen ties with China, marking the first concrete step in a world scenario polarised by the Cold War.
Brazil's first Trade Mission to China, organised by Jânio Quadros in 1961, consolidated this contact, resulting in the first "Interbank Adjustment" between the two countries. However, the rapprochement was interrupted by a political incident in 1964, known as "The Case of the Nine Chinese", which temporarily jeopardised the relationship.
In the 1970s, after the first oil crisis, the Brazilian government, under the leadership of President Ernesto Geisel, saw China as a strategic partner for diversifying international trade and strengthening Brazil in international organisations. Since the re-establishment of diplomatic relations in 1974, Brazil and China have collaborated intensively in various areas, promoting cultural, educational and commercial exchanges.
Advances in Health, Trade and Technology
Today, we live in an era of great technological advances, and the Sino-Brazilian partnership stands out as essential to facing modern challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, cooperation between Brazil and China was vital for the production of the Coronavac vaccine, symbolising the trust and solidarity between our countries.
On the economic front, Brazil has become one of China's biggest trading partners in Latin America. China is the main destination for Brazilian exports of soya, iron ore and oil, while Chinese manufactured products play a central role in the Brazilian market. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, exports to China reached a record US$ 23 billion, an increase of 9.8% over the previous year.
In addition to trade, Chinese investment in infrastructure in Brazil has been significant, including energy, transport and technology projects. Huawei, for example, has played a key role in implementing the 5G network in Brazil, bringing innovation and connectivity to millions of Brazilians.
Education and Culture: The Role of the Third Sector
Beyond the numbers and the big transactions, Sino-Brazilian relations have a cultural and social dimension that deserves to be emphasised. Through the Sino-Brazilian Friendship Association, we promote cultural dialogue and strengthen ties between our societies. Events such as the 2023 and 2024 judicial exchanges and the bilateral agreement with Jinan University are concrete examples of how we are building cultural and academic bridges.
Our association also plays a key role in organising events and seminars, such as the meeting at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, which discussed the implementation of Chinese language courses for Brazilian students. These initiatives foster mutual understanding and bring our nations closer together.
Future prospects
The future of Sino-Brazilian relations is promising, with countless opportunities for co-operation in areas such as health, education, technology and infrastructure. The next CPAFFC Friendship Forum, which will take place in October 2024, will be a key platform for exploring new initiatives and deepening our partnership.
Sectors such as agribusiness, renewable energy and green technologies also offer vast potential for expanding collaboration, promoting sustainable development and innovation for both countries.
Conclusion
As we celebrate five decades of diplomatic relations between Brazil and China, we reaffirm our commitment to friendship, co-operation and shared development. The Sino-Brazilian Friendship Association will continue to work tirelessly to strengthen ties between our nations, promoting a future of joint prosperity.
May the next 50 years be marked by new partnerships and achievements, guided by the spirit of friendship and mutual respect between Brazil and China. Together, we can achieve great things and contribute to a fairer and more harmonious world.
