Brazil-China Friendship Night celebrates cultural and diplomatic ties in Rio de Janeiro

The event strengthened the strategic partnership between the two countries, featuring the presence of Chinese and Brazilian authorities, along with performances by the Forte de Copacabana Orchestra and the Estação Primeira de Mangueira Samba School.

Rio de Janeiro. The Fundação Cesgranrio served as the venue on November 3, 2025, of the “Brazil-China Friendship NightChina” (China-Brazil Friendship Night), a celebration dedicated to strengthening the diplomatic, cultural, and social ties between Brazil and the People’s Republic of ChinaThe event brought together government officials, institutional representatives, artists, and members of the Sino-Brazilian community, reaffirming Rio de Janeiro’s role as a symbol of international cooperation and intercultural dialogue.

Organized by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), by the Consulate General of China in Rio de Janeiro and by the Brazil-China Friendship Associationthe meeting highlighted the growing integration between the two nations in areas such as trade, education, science, and culture.

Diplomacy and culture hand in hand

At the opening ceremony, the Consul General of China in Rio de Janeiro, Tian Min (田敏), stated that bilateral relations “are experiencing one of the best moments in history,” highlighting the importance of friendship between the peoples and the building of a community with a shared future.

The Vice President of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), Shen Xin (沈昕)recalled the letter sent by President Xi Jinping (习近平) to Brazilian friends, emphasizing that the words of the Chinese leader “[…] strengthened mutual trust and symbolize a new phase of lasting friendship between the Yangtze and the Amazon.”.

Shen also mentioned the Brazilian educator Paulo Freirerecalling his famous quote: “Brazil is the tropic of China.”, to illustrate the intellectual and cultural affinity between the two countries.

Representing the Rio de Janeiro State Parliament, Deputada Tia Jú (蒂娅·茹), Vice President of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), emphasized that the event goes beyond formal diplomacy.

A spectacle of rhythms and cultures

The evening was marked by performances that embodied the spirit of Sino-Brazilian unity.
The Forte de Copacabana Orchestra enchanted the audience with a repertoire that blended Chinese and Brazilian melodies, moving the guests with its harmony.

The closing performance was presented by the Estação Primeira de Mangueira Samba School, which brought the contagious rhythm of samba, leading the audience to bursts of applause and countless cellphone recordings.

Among those present were the President of the Brazil-China Friendship Association, Henrique da Nóbregaand the President of the Fundação Cesgranrio, Jairo Pereira. Jairo noted that he had visited China the previous year, strengthening academic and cultural ties between the two countries.

Education and culture are lasting bridges between nations. Cesgranrio is proud to host an event that unites Rio’s samba with China’s ancient traditions.

Friendship with deep roots

The “China-Brazil Friendship Night” takes place in a context of intensified bilateral relations. According to the Chinese Consulate, cultural, academic, and commercial exchanges between the two countries grew significantly in 2025.

The presence of local and national leaders reinforced the nature of proximity diplomacybringing governments, universities, businesses, and communities closer together. According to experts, Rio de Janeiro reaffirms its position as a international hub for cultural relations.

It is an example of successful cultural diplomacy that humanizes cooperation between states and strengthens Brazil’s presence within the Sino–Latin American axis.

Also present were other founding members of the Sino-Brazilian Friendship Associationwho have played a key role in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. Attending the event were the Judge Guaraci Campos Vianna, Vice President of the Association; Léo Farias, Director of Institutional Relations; Daniela Lima Barroso Fernandes, Financial Director; Leonardo Rocha Almeida, Deputy Secretary; and Leandro Su, Secretary-General. The group’s presence reinforced the organization’s commitment to promoting ongoing dialogue between Brazil and China, expanding initiatives for cultural, educational, and economic cooperation.

Between Samba and Silk: The Future of Cooperation

More than a festive evening, the gathering symbolized the future of Sino-Brazilian relations — a partnership that is expected to expand in the areas of education, technology, science, tourism, and investment.
The harmony between the Chinese violins and Mangueira’s surdo drum embodied the spirit of the evening: a friendship that renews itself, adapts, and continues to flow like the great rivers mentioned by Shen Xin.
